The German Bishops’ Conference assembles the Catholic bishops of all German dioceses. Members include diocesan bishops, coadjutors, diocesan administrators and auxiliary bishops.
Functions of the German Bishops’ Conference:
- Explore and promote common pastoral objectives
- Mutual consultation
- Necessary coordination of Church activities
- Take common decisions
- Cultivate relations with other Bishops’ Conferences
The plenary assembly of all bishops is the overarching body of the German Bishops’ Conference. The plenary assembly meets regularly for several days in spring and in autumn. The bishops confer with each other in numerous working sessions, they coordinate functions and appointments and take decisions on behalf of the Church in Germany.
The activities and functions of the German Bishops’ Conference are supported by the Secretariat of the German Bishops’ Conference in Bonn, the Catholic liaison office in Berlin as well as by further offices for special areas. Their structure and working methods are established in the rules of procedure of the German Bishops’ Conference.
