President of the German Bishops’ Conference

Archbishop Dr. Robert Zollitsch was born in Filipovo, former Yugoslavia, on 9 August 1938. He was ordained priest in Freiburg on 27 May 1965. On 16 June 2003, he was appointed Archbishop of Freiburg by Pope John Paul II. On 20 July 2003, he received episcopal consecration from Archbishop em. Dr. Oskar Saier and was installed as 14th Archbishop of Freiburg. His motto is: IN FIDEI COMMUNIONE – In the communion of faith.

  • 1946after flight and expulsion, the family came to Oberschüpf in the district of Tauberbischofsheim (archdiocese of Freiburg), and then moved to Mannheim-Rheinau in 1953
  • 1960-1964
    studied theology in Freiburg i.Br. and Munich, received pastoral training at the St. Peter im Schwarzwald seminary
  • 27-05-1965
    ordained priest in the Minster of Freiburg by Archbishop Dr. Hermann Schäufele, then served as chaplain in Mannheim and Buchen
  • 1967-1974
    tutor at the Collegium Borromaeum
  • 1972-1974
    lecturer at the St. Peter im Schwarzwald seminary
  • 1974
    received his doctorate in theology with a thesis on: „Ministry and function of priests in the first two centuries“
  • 1974-1983
    director of the archdiocesan Collegium Borromaeum in Freiburg i.Br.
  •  1984
    canon of the metropolitan chapter of Freiburg i.Br.
  • 1983-2003
    personnel manager of the archdiocese appointed by Archbishop Dr. Oskar Saier
  • 16-06-2003
    appointed the 14th Archbishop of Freiburg by Pope John Paul II

    received episcopal consecration from Archbishop em. Dr. Oskar Saier, installed as Archbishop of Freiburg
