The President presides over the meetings of bishops and serves as the external representative of the German Bishops’ Conference towards the Government and society. He also acts as the spokesman for the German Bishops’ Conference vis-à-vis the public. In exercising his office, the President must comply with the resolutions passed by the Plenary Assembly and the Permanent Council.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, has been President of the German Bishops’ Conference since 14 March 2014.

Cardinal Marx was born on 21 September 1953 in Geseke (Germany). He studied theology and philosophy in Paderborn and Paris and was ordinated priest on 2 June 1979. Following his PhD thesis, he became Director of the “Kommende” in Dortmund and in 1996 Professor of Catholic Social Teaching at the Faculty of Theology in Paderborn. On 23 July 1996 he was consecrated bishop and became Bishop of Trier; and since 2008 he has been the Archbishop of Munich and Freising.

Since 2006 Cardinal Marx has been a member of COMECE (Commission of the Bishop’s Conferences of the European Community) and was elected President of COMECE in 2012 and reelected 2015.

Since October 2013, Cardinal Marx is a member of Pope Francis’ Council of Cardinal Advisors and in March 2014 he was appointed coordinator of the Vatican Council for the Economy.

Also in March 2014 Cardinal Marx was elected President of the German Bishop’s Conference.
